We’ve been talking a lot about exercise lately, but when it comes to overall health and fitness your diet can not be ignored. So this post is about food, specifically those foods rich in fiber. Why? Because fiber is so very important in helping reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Fiber too can help you feel fuller, so you eat less. That said, are YOU eating enough dietary fiber? Before you answer that let me explain what fiber is. Fiber is the structural parts of fruits, vegetables, and grains your digestive system can’t breakdown or digest. Ideally, you should get at least 25-35 grams per day. Generally speaking, the best sources includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and whole grains. You should also know there’s two kinds of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber can be digested by the body. It prolongs stomach emptying time so that sugar is released and absorbed more slowly. It also helps reduce cholesterol. Oats, beans, rice, brans, citrus fruits, strawberries, and blueberries are great sources of this kind of fiber. Insoluble fiber isn’t digested or broken down by the body. It helps move other foods through the digestive system faster. This kind of fiber keeps bowels functioning well and prevents constipation. Fruit skins, stringy veggies, crunch whole grains (whole wheat breads, wheat bran, rye, and most other whole grains), cabbage, beats, carrots, brussel sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, apple skins. When adding more fiber to your diet keep in mind you should do it slowly. Too much too soon will cause you lose some friends momentarily, to put it mildly. LOL. Increase your intake gradually to avoid bloating and cramping. Be sure to drink plenty of water too, at least 6 to 8 glasses, unless otherwise advised by your physician. The water will help keep things movingly smoothly. As you buy food, start reading food labels more carefully too. Under the usual “Nutrition Facts” look for words “dietary fiber”. Per serving a good source of fiber should have at least 2.5 to 5 grams or at least 10% of the daily value.
